As an NJ Maternity Photographer, one of my most frequently asked questions is “What should we wear for our maternity photos?” And it’s a good question! The clothing you choose has a huge impact on your final images. However, I know from experience that shopping during pregnancy can be, well … challenging. Here are some ideas to make the experience a bit more enjoyable.

Iā€™m participating in a blog circle this week and am sharing a link to an amazing photographer in Hawaii! Make sure to check out her link at the end of this post.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos | NJ Maternity Photographer

  • Chose Your Outfit First: If your partner or children are joining in on your maternity photos, make sure to plan your outfit first! Mom’s dress is the most important garment, so select that one first, and then work on coordinating your other family members.

  • Keep Comfort in Mind: Long, flowy dresses photograph beautifully for maternity sessions. They are flattering, comfortable, and highlight your bump. They also make it easy to move around and chase little ones!

  • Neutral Colors and Pastels: Light, neutral colors like cream, beige, soft greens, blues, and pinks work really well for maternity sessions. Avoid black, red, and neon colors as they can cast unflattering light back onto your skin tone.

  • Avoid Busy Patterns: Steer clear of loud patterns or prints, as they can be distracting. Soft florals or subtle textures are a better choice. We want the focus of your maternity portraits to be on you and your family, not your clothing.

  • Maternity Props: While I typically do not include props during my sessions, if you want to bring an ultrasound picture or special item of clothing, that is more than welcome!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. Trust your instincts and choose outfits that make you feel beautiful and happy!

The above images were taken at the Cross Estate Gardens, one of my favorite locations for a New Jersey maternity session.
